Reported by Jules Levin
At an ongoing conference I Washington DC, the 13th Intl Symposium on Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease, this study was presented on the screening for HBV among Asian-Americans by Asian primary care providers in the USA.
"Many Asian patients are not perceived as being at risk for CHB by their Asian-American PCPs and are not screened, despite high risk" .... "40-65% of Asian-Americans with CHB are estimated to go unscreened3"
"Education of PCPs is needed to improve HBV awareness and diagnosis of CHB in Asian-American patients
-- Health risks of HBV and CHB
-- Recommendation to implement new CDC HBV screening and management guidelines, especially in high-risk patients"
Yet, HBV affects Asian-Americans disprpotionately: the study presenter said - prevalence is 10% or more vs <2% in the general US population; risk for HCC is 2.7 times greater for Asian-Americans than for Caucasians.
