Diastolic Function Correlates With
Pericardial Fat [fat around the heart] and Vascular Remodeling in HIV

......In treated HIV infection, higher pericardial fat volumes are associated with coronary artery plaque and systemic inflammation.....[in this study] HIV+ participants had lower LV volume index/HIV+ subjects with any diastolic dysfunction (Grade I or II) had higher pericardial fat volume /pericardial fat volume and density remained independently associated with diastolic dysfunction.......Ectopic fat tissue overlying the myocardium and coronary arteries (pericardial fat), may have pathologic effects on the heart. In treated HIV infection, higher pericardial fat volumes are associated with coronary artery plaque and systemic inflammation, but the relationship to left ventricular (LV) structure and function is unknown.....this study found: "Higher pericardial fat volume and lower density are associated with LV diastolic dysfunction independent of age, gender, and body mass index. This study builds on previous work associating ectopic pericardial fat with inflammation and cardiometabolicrisk. Altered ectopic fat distribution may be a risk factor for heart failure in aging HIV-infected patients on ART.

"Diastolic dysfunction refers to an abnormality in how the heart fills with blood during diastole. The heart muscles do not relax in a normal manner and the heart may fill too slowly, asynchronously or with an elevation in filling pressure only."
