IAC: Contribution of T cells to RANKL/OPG imbalance and bone loss in HIV infection - (07/29/16)....fears of an impending epidemic of bone fractures in this population.....HIV infection causes significant bone loss and skeletal deterioration, leading to fractures that are often devastating and incur significant financial burden on patients and their families. HIV-infected individuals have up to a five-fold higher risk of bone fractures, and the increasing average age of people living with HIV/AIDS has triggered fears of an impending epidemic of bone fractures in this population. Antiretroviral therapy, used to manage HIV infection, fails to prevent, but rather paradoxically accelerates skeletal decline
IAC: Aging & Inflammation: 10 yrs decreased life expectancy/T-cell activation remind high despite viral suppression/inflammation markers predict disease & death- "Pathophysiology of Non-Communicable Diseases in Treated HIV Infection: Is there a common path?" talk by Peter Hunt - (07/22/16)
IAC: HIV-associated alteration in gut microbiota are associated with increased inflammation and infection of enteric CD4+ T cells - (07/22/16)....."These data suggest that a loss of anti-inflammatory (beneficial) bacteria with HIV infection has the potential to drive chronic inflammation observed in HIV-infected individuals. Furthermore, our infectivity assays indicate a potential role of the HIV-associated gut microbiome in disease transmission and progression."
IAC: HIV Life Expectancy Jumps 34 Years in Switzerland But Lags General Population - Mark Mascolini - (07/22/16)
IAC: GETTING THERE? LIFE EXPECTANCY BY HIV STATUS AND EDUCATION IN SWITZERLAND ...former & even moreso current IDUs, and smokers have much reduced life expectancy - (07/29/16) from Jules: life expectancy lags quite a lot in this study compared to the general population particularly when looking at HIV+ with less than higher education where you see
[from Jules: it is impossible to estimate & project life expectancy, and all the studies are estimates & projections, it is likely life expectancy will be much worse for many particularly for those with frailty, with falls & fractures, with multiple comorbidities and with genetic predispositions].....IN THIS STUDY: Life expectancy with HIV at age 20 jumped from 20.8 years in 1992-1995 to 54.9 years in 2006-2013 [1]. But in the most recent period life expectancy in the most-educated HIV-positive people matched that of only the least-educated people in the general population.....Among MSM life expectancy at age 20 climbed from 22.9 years in 1992-1995 to 56.8 years in 2006-2013. Life expectancy in people infected with HIV heterosexually was 29.6 years in 1992-1995 and 56.7 years in 2006-2013, and in people infected while injecting drugs 15.7 years in 1992-1995 and 35.8 years in 2006-2013. In 2006-2013, life expectancy at age 20 in people with HIV who never smoked was 59.0 years, compared with 54.6 years in former smokers, and 49.4 years in current smokers. The researchers noted that "in the recent cART era, HIV-positive individuals may lose more life years through smoking than through their HIV infection." The 60.0-year life expectancy with HIV and higher education in 2006-2013 nearly matched the 61.2-year life expectancy in the general population with only compulsory education and substantially lagged the 65.3-year life expectancy in the general population with higher education.
Frailty 11-23% men >50, median age 59 ....IAC: Differences in health-related quality of life highlight the different emphases of three frailty instruments in older Australian men living with HIV ....13% had HCV coinfection - (08/04/16)
IAC: Impact of Aging on non-AIDS Comorbidity in Large Spanish HIV Cohort - Mark Mascolini - (07/22/16) tripling of those aged 60-64
IAC: START Study - Deferred antiretroviral therapy is associated with lower eGFR in HIV-positive individuals with high CD4 counts - (07/20/16)
IAC: CANCER TREATMENT IN ELDERLY INDIVIDUALS - National Cancer Institute: HIV+ have lower rates of cancer treatment when <70 years old; HIV+ less likely to receive treatment quickly - (08/04/16)
IAC: Beyond cervical cancer: gynecological malignancies and treatment in HIV+ women - (08/03/16)....median age 46 / age range 25-83
IAC: HIV associated neurocognitive disorder in a peri-urban HIV clinic in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa - (07/29/16)

IAC: Incidence [increased a lot with aging] of neurological disorders among HIV-infected individuals with universal health care in Taiwan, 2000 through 2010- (07/29/16)
IAC: CD8-Cell Exhaustions Predicts Primary HIV Infection Progression - HIV Causes CD8 Exhaustion-Occurs Early/Predicts HIV Progression - (07/29/16)....."viremia during early HIV infection may drive exhaustion of effector CD8 T cells, impacting upon subsequent disease outcomes.”
IAC: Impact of a fat-rich diet on the pathogenesis of SIV infection in the African green monkey host - "induced microbial translocation and elevated immune activation and inflammation/ impacted survival/ altered metabolism profile and liver " - (07/25/16)
