WHO Webinar April 8 2020

Dr Olivier Nawej, Senior Resident, HIV / AIDS consultations, Geneva University Hospitals (HUG)

They appear to say on webinar Kaletra is used during & after hospitalization and only 4 of 985 COVID hospitalizations in Geneva were HIV+, PLWH appear to have no greater risk of contracting COVID in this limited experience, as also observed in several additional anecdotally reported limited experiences including from Spain, including small data set published from China. Truvada study started in Spain, thinking is what might be causing no worse or even protective affect in PLWH from getting COVID & experiencing less symptoms as these anecdotal reports say - perhaps ARTs, maybe Truvada, or that HIV immunosuppression even with high CD4 & VL <20 might prevent or reduce inflammatory cytokine storm harmful response to COVID. Dr Tshikung shared insights from people living with HIV in Hubei, China, and how these are shaping the Geneva healthcare response to support people living with HIV. The HIV Unit in Geneva has prepared for risks related to anxiety among people living with HIV, such as loss to follow up and treatment interruption. The unit has also determined how to protect people who are vulnerable and how to continue providing HIV testing and post-exposure prophylaxis during this time. Actions include increasing telemedicine and maintenance of a hotline, postponing routine follow up for vulnerable people and routine HIV and STI testing for asymptomatic individuals without risk exposure, and supporting home delivery of medication.
