I am now to see a G.I. doctor. What is the purpose/role of this doctor?

Dear Dr. Chung,

I was recently diagnosed with HCV. My doctor (whom I trust) ordered additional blood work and a sonogram.

The results being elevated ALT's and inflammation of the liver. I am now to see a G.I. doctor. What is the purpose/role of this doctor? I am concerned about doing a biopsy - is it absolutely necessary? The reading I have done regarding treatment does not promote confidence in me that it is worthwhile - too many side effects. What level of drinking is safe? Is the substitution of wine for hard liquor an option?

Thanks.

You should follow through on this. there is an excellent chance you may be cured with therapy (>50%), even better if you have certain strains of HCV. if you are still against therapy after discussion with your doctor, then the liver biopsy will tell you whether watching and waiting for better therapies to arrive makes sense. operating without this information with treatment options at your disposal i think puts you at a disadvantage.

(editorial note from Jules Levin) In general, it is recommended that you do not drink alcohol if you have Hepatitis C. This includes all forms; beer, wine and liquor.
