I have chronic muscle spasms in my back and occasionally have to take 1/2 vicodan or 1/2 tylenol w/codeine. I just found out that I may have hepatitis C and have an appt for an ultrasound and liver biopsy in the next 2 months. Should I be concerned about taking these pills and if so, what would be a better choice? thanks
 

You should not be concerned if the doses of these drugs are low. All drugs that are metabolized by the liver can have alterations in clearance from the body, if there is significant liver damage. We use up to 6 ,500mg tablets of acetaminophen without any problem as well as non steroidal antinflamatories. You are using codeine in very low doses, and again this should not be a problem, unless significant liver disease is present.
