I'm one of those rare people who spontaneously cleared HCV without treatment.

Dear Dr. Chung,

I've had Aids since 1983 and also tested positive for HCV antibodies. Currently the HIV viral load is usually undetectable and my CD4 cells average 4-500 and my health is good.

Recently I was preparing for a liver biopsy anticipating going on interferon and my liver viral load came back twice undetectable to my doctors surprise. Usually my liver enzymes are quite elevated and the liver viral load averages 750,000. This time everything came back normal therefore my doctor suspects I'm one of those rare people who spontaneously cleared HCV without treatment. I'm afraid to celebrate this great news because it seems unbelievable and I don't want to get my hopes up.

I would appreciate your opinion on what happen to my HCV and if you think it's gone for ever?

Thank you, Jack

That is very good news. if i understand you correctly, and your HCV RNA was undetectable, with normalization of liver enzymes, this is very promising. however, given that this was a onetime determination, i would repeat it again in several months to be sure this is confirmed. if over time your HCV RNA remains negative with normal enzymes, then this will be a very good sign.
