I am very concerned that the kidney failure is the result of a new HIV medication that is toxic to the kidneys.

Dear Dr. Chung,

I work with prisoners with HIV and hepatitis C. Recently at a prison in California, within a period of six months, three prisoners with HIV have suffered kidney failure. At this time, I do not know which cocktail they were on. I will find that out. I am very concerned that the kidney failure is the result of a new HIV medication that is toxic to the kidneys. Have you heard about any increase in kidney failure. All three prisoners are African American and I do have a little information about HIVAN and understand that it is a prevalent among African Americans.

Any ideas? Amprenavir, foscarnet?

I have not seen an uptick in renal failure trends in coinfected patients of late. i would be sure that these patients don't have HCV related cryoglobulinemia and membranoproliferative GN. however, i will look into it. thank you for your communication.
