I AM THE CARE TAKES OF A 44 YEAR OLD MALE WITH HEP B C AND CIRROHSIS. HE IS GOING THROUG THE CLASSES FOR A TRANSPLANT, BUT IS SO SICK HE CANT ATTEND.
 
HE IS NOT BEING TREATED FOR THE HEPATITIS AND I ASKED THE DR WHY AND SHE SAID HE WAS TOO FAR GONE. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
 
HE LAYS IN THE BED ALL THE TIME AND IS SO SHAKIE ON HIS FEET I AM AFRAID HE WILL FALL.
 
HIS LIVER IS NO LARGER THAN MY HAND. HE IS STARTING TO TURN YELLOW. HE IS NOT TAKING ANYTHING BUT LASEX AND ALDACTONE FOR FLUID, PROTONIX, NEOMYCENE, K-DUR AND ULTRAN.
 
HOW LONG CAN HE LAST?

It seems that your patient is indeed very sick. At this point therapy for HCV, or HBV is not given because the possibility of response is very low ,and the risks and adverse events very high. End stage patients can deteriorate very rapidly during therapy ,and die from complications of the treatment. The time frame this patient can survive, only God knows. Usually end stage patients, die within a year of overt encephalopathy or jaundice. The causes of death are hepatic failure,or gastrointestinal bleeding, or infection most of the time. The only alternative at this time, would be liver trasplant. Good luck.
