Chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C cause thousands of cases of liver cancer, liver disease, and death each year Ñ taking the heaviest toll among Asians, Pacific Islanders, and blacks in the U.S. Ñ and these infections account for nearly half of the liver transplantations that must be performed annually. Although they are preventable infections, viral hepatitis rates have not dropped in the United States, pointing to gaps in screening, prevention, and treatment. Hepatitis and Liver Cancer: A National Strategy for Prevention and Control of Hepatitis B and C, a new report from the Institute of Medicine, recommends ways to boost awareness among health care and social service providers as well as the general public and steps to improve screening, vaccination, treatment, and control of viral hepatitis.
